Chapter 28

Harriet agrees to come over that afternoon, even though it's a weekend.

'She says she'll be here as soon as she's finished a viewing in Falmouth,' Justin says, slipping his phone in his pocket.

'That's good,' I say, smiling. I don't want to risk another confrontation with him so I don't mention my missing SIM card or that the wifi's been disabled. 'I'm still feeling cold, so I think I'll have another lie down.'

I curl up on the sofa under the blanket in front of the fire and close my eyes, pretending to sleep. Justin acts concerned and brings me a pillow from the bedroom, but I can't drift off, not with him in the house. He could be planning anything.

Fortunately, he leaves me in peace. I hear his footsteps on the stairs and the creak of the floorboards in one of the spare rooms where there's a desk. I guess he's catching up with work on his laptop. At least it gives me some space while we wait.

The next hour feels like a lifetime, but eventually a car pulls up outside and a sharp tap at the door signals Harriet's arrival.

Justin bounds down the stairs and is at the door before I can get up, inviting her in, thanking her for coming.

I toss my blanket over the back of the sofa and run my fingers through my hair, hoping to give it a bit of volume. It's still caked in brine. I should have had a shower, but I've had other things on my mind.

'Hey, Harriet,' I say, wandering into the hall, trying to look casual.

Harriet looks achingly gorgeous, but today I don't care. All I care about is letting her know I need her help.

Justin shows her into the dining room. She takes a place at the head of the table while he sits at the opposite end, facing her, like two political leaders about to discuss world peace. I pull up a chair between them.

Harriet reaches into her bag for a notebook and pen, and when she catches my gaze, I open my eyes wide, trying to signal that something's wrong without Justin catching on to what I'm up to. That I desperately need her help.

But she just smiles back, clicks her pen and folds open her notebook to a clean page.

'We've got a big problem,' Justin says, clasping his hands on the table, all businesslike. 'The Carlyons want to evict us and I want to know what you are doing about it.'

He's taking that tone with her again, like she's one of his minions here at his beck and call. How dare he speak to her like that when she dropped everything to come over. Is it because she's a woman? Or is he just so arrogant, he speaks to everyone like that? I haven't noticed it before, but maybe I haven't been paying attention.

Harriet appears unfazed, mirroring his body language, her hands resting on the table like his, watching him with an equally serious expression, head cocked slightly to one side.
